Raigad Fort in Maharashtra, once called Rairi, became the Maratha Empire’s capital after Shivaji Maharaj captured and rebuilt it in 1656. Site of his 1674 coronation, the fort later changed hands between the Mughals, Siddis, Marathas, and British, who called it the “Gibraltar of the East.”
